About us

We are a small studio with high standards and an appetite for social change

We specialise in ethical brands, charities and social enterprise. Our purpose is to provide top level design work and solid brand thinking to the third sector and in particular to advance the social enterprise movement in Scotland. We are a social enterprise ourselves and know the landscape inside out.

A strong brand means a strong connection with your audience. We will work collaboratively with you to extract the creativity from within and help them make that bond through good design and brand strategy. We will give you the confidence to push the boundaries of design and marketing, to think a little bigger and achieve a lot more.

Doug Summers

Creative Director

Doug lives and breathes branding and is motivated by beautiful design with a purpose. He has degrees in Marketing and Graphic Design as well as several years experience in web development and a healthy and apt interest in all things cultural and historic. He has an inspiring ability to look at things differently. Having worked with Bold for 7+ years, he now manages the team and helps a wide range of clients to envision their future and achieve bold objectives through quality design, strategic branding and careful project management.

Jonathan Gilbride

Graphic Designer

Having a diverse and extensive background in multiple areas of graphic design, Jonathan has the toolkit he needs to effectively solve problems and provide visual solutions for Bold’s clients. Whilst Jonathan studied at ECA, working towards his BA (Hons) in Graphic Design, he knew he had a keen eye for visual communication as a whole. Evidence soon stacked up that this was the case during his time at university, with Jonathan being awarded Up & Coming Young Designer of the Year in 2018 at Graphic Design Festival Scotland, a finalist for Young and Powerful - a Scottish-wide poster competition for students, as well as also having a copy of a publication he designed purchased by The National Library of Scotland to be stored in their Archives. Jonathan now has an expansive skillset, ranging from mural painting to website design - but has always had a passion for Brand Identity and Typography.

Annie Nickolay-Blake

Studio Coordinator

Annie co-ordinates the activities of the studio and keeps the wheels turning. She has a background in Art History and balances work between project support and her own practice. She has a particular interest in the impact of design and the environment on wellbeing, and has explored this within organisations including Grizedale Arts and ONCA.
